Blah Blah Blah

Blah Blah Blah is a universal phrase

No matter where you go or whatever the language, this phrase is universal.

On my recent travels to Greece, Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia I was astounded by the number of times I heard the phrase Blah Blah Blah by pretty much all of the guides in each country. I had never really noticed it before this trip – but for some reason it was loud and proud this time around.

How can this be?

Whilst all of my tours were conducted in English, not one of the guides was a native English speaker. They all spoke a number of languages, as they do in Europe, but I just couldn’t believe how this slang-style phrase had seeped in and formed part of their every day vernacular. Even with the thickest of accents, there it was – clear as day. Not one of them missed a beat with the phrase and knew exactly when to use it and how it added to the story they were telling.

In the end I could help but giggle to myself each time I heard it. I thought it was great, strange but great.

Just draw breath!

The other thing I noticed about most of the guides was that no matter what country I was in, they would finish telling you one thing and without hesitation, move straight onto the next point without some sort of a breath or break in the converstaion. No stops between sentences, no pause to emphasise the detail, just straight onto the next point without drawing breath.

In the beginning it was quite hard to get used to as you are looking one way, listening to all they have to say and taking it all in…… then all of a sudden they are talking about something completely different and have moved on, walked away and you are still looking in the same old direction from the previous point and then have to do a little jog to keep up with them when you realise you are no longer looking at the same thing or indeed standing in the same position as the guide. I got it in the end, but you really did have to listen and be ready to move. Especially when the crowds were insane – like in Dubrovnik.

I have never come across this before, not that I take too many tours, but it was very noticeable on this trip.

Just an observation and one that befuddled me for a while, but I loved it and all this just adds to the experience of the location and country.

Travel is the (confusing) best.
