Iguazu Falls – Argentina side
OMG! I LOVE this place. It is spectacular and adventurous, and fun experiencing the might and power of mother nature. We were at the falls for about 7 hours today and arrived nice and early to avoid too much heat and get there before the hoards of tour buses. We left the hotel 7.30am but it seems everyone else did too. I think independent travellers are like minded people. Given that most of us on the tour like to have a bit of personal time with the city/artefact/statue/natural element that we are visiting, we were all ok with getting up and leaving early. When we needed to, we walked pretty fast to…

Patagonia I love you
El Calafate I flew into El Calafate – a small town around 3,000 km’s south from Buenos Aires, which is the gateway to Patagonia. Looking out the plane window as you descend you see gorgeous blue turquoise water with smaller streams running off into the distance. This is Lake Argentina on whose shores El Calafate was built. The airport feels new-ish and there are some great maps in the baggage claim area showing those who perhaps have not done enough pre-study of the area exactly where you are and what is around you – highlighting distances between the towns in hours and km’s. This is quite interesting and I am…

Anyone for Polo?
As soon as I saw the ad for this I was hooked. How Argentinian is this sport, known the world over of which this country is rated one of the best? The ad describes how you go out to a ranch, watch a game of polo, drink Argentinian wine, have a traditional Argentinian BBQ, swim in the pool if you like, learn the rules of engagement then actually play a game of polo. Who wouldn’t want to do this – it sounds bloody awesome. Ready or not As I jump on the transfer bus, I greet everyone and introduce myself. We are a group of 11 and there are two…

Patagonia Trekking 2
El Chalten – Laguna de los Tres I’d heard good things about this particular trek and the guy at reception told me that it’s best to do this particular trek on a good day with not much wind and don’t even think about it if it is cloudy. He also mentioned that it’s very steep for the last hour! I considered myself warned. Given the weather conditions over the coming two days he recommended this trek be today rather than yesterday, and I was very grateful for his advice. I was out early-ish and on the trail by 6.00am with another sunny and crisp morning to enjoy. Turns out not only…

Patagonia – Trekking 1
El Chalten – Trek 1 I headed off next to El Chalten, a 200km bus ride away from El Calafate. It is here that world renowned walks are located. The bus is an older one that has a really annoying clicking sound (like an indicator) that is on the whole time, not sure what it was but after about an hour into the 3 hour drive, I put my ears in and listened to music to drown it out. The road trip Despite the volume of clouds in the sky some more ominous than others there are holes dotted here and there allowing the still fighting light to pierce the…
