Supermarket Surprise
Supermarkets can really tell a story about their country. What they eat, average cost of living, is the economy doing well with fully stocked shelves? Do they showcase locally produced or imported foods? It’s a great habit to have Whenever I travel I always head to a supermarket to see what’s in store – literally. In France there are rows and rows of diary products, cheeses yogurts etc. In Italy – as you can imagine – rows and rows of pasta. China had the biggest bags of rice I have ever seen – some larger than horse feed sacks. So I was curious to see what secrets a Croatian supermarket…

Nikola Tesla
If your hate could be turned into electricity, you could light up the world. Nikola Tesla. I was told in no uncertain terms by Irena, my fantastic Kompas Tour Guide in Croatia, that if there is one name I simply must remember from my time in Croatia – it’s Nikola Tesla. Not the car company, but perhaps the man whose name has inspired the new cars. So here are few facts about little known Nikola Tesla that may make you think a little more deeply about electricity and other gadgets and where their origins came from. Where did he come from? Up in smoke
You forget how lucky we are in Australia to have such tight smoking laws. Each time I travel to Europe or Asia I am reminded how varied and lagging smoking laws can be in different countries. Most of them creating the roll-your-own style cigarettes which I believe this is the cheaper way to smoke than buying a packet of cigarettes. Good luck finding a seat with fresh air The café culture is big in Croatia – it’s a beloved tradition to sit and take your time to have your coffee, whether…

Insights from Croatia
After spending nearly three weeks in Croatia hearing so many stories both past and present, it was not hard to walk away loving her spirit and courage, even though not all of her history is pleasant. Some things about this area that I found of interest are: They all know their history I’m a bit of a history buff, so hearing all about who conquered whom from the 6th century BC onwards was rather fascinating. More so because nearly every citizen i spoke to during my trip could quote most of their long and complicated history. Many Australians would struggle to even get through our very small background – all…

Blah Blah Blah is a universal phrase
No matter where you go or whatever the language, this phrase is universal. On my recent travels to Greece, Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia I was astounded by the number of times I heard the phrase Blah Blah Blah by pretty much all of the guides in each country. I had never really noticed it before this trip – but for some reason it was loud and proud this time around. How can this be? Whilst all of my tours were conducted in English, not one of the guides was a native English speaker. They all spoke a number of languages, as they do in Europe, but I just couldn’t believe…
